A single person does not get the support payment the same as a couple does. A parent with two kids gets a different number than a parent with one. In this tutorial, let’s break down the ODSP monthly amount by family size, and we will give you the actual rate table for 2026, explain how each number is built, and point out the little details.

How ODSP Builds Your Monthly Amount

Before I give you the table, you need to understand one thing. Every ODSP monthly amount has two layers of support, Basic Needs and Shelter Allowance.

Ontario Basic Needs cover food, clothing, and personal items. This amount is fixed based on how many people are in your family and their ages.

ODPS Shelter Allowance covers rent, mortgage, heat, hydro, water, and home insurance. Unlike basic needs, this part is capped. You can only receive up to a certain maximum, and you only get what you actually pay.

So when you look at the numbers below, understand that these are maximums. If your rent is lower than the shelter maximum for your family size, your total payment will be lower, too.

Complete ODSP Rate Table for 2026 (January to June)

These rates are in effect until June 30, 2026. On July 1, a 1.9% inflation increase will apply to ODPS Monthly amounts

Family Situation

Basic Needs

Maximum Shelter Allowance

Total Monthly Maximum

Single Person

$809

$599

$1,408

Single Person with Disability (Board and Lodge)

N/A

N/A

$1,038

Couple (Both Not Disabled)

$1,166

$941

$2,107

Couple (Both Disabled)

$1,383

$987

$2,370

Single Parent with 1 Child Under 18

$952

$941

$1,893

Single Parent with 1 Child 18 or Over

$952

$941

$1,893

Single Parent with 2 Children Under 18

$952

$1,018

$1,970

Single Parent with 3 Children Under 18

$952

$1,094

$2,046

Couple with 1 Child Under 18

$1,166

$1,018

$2,184

Couple with 2 Children Under 18

$1,166

$1,105

$2,271

Couple with 3 Children Under 18

$1,166

$1,191

$2,357

Board and lodge rates apply when food and shelter come from the same source, such as living with parents who buy and cook your meals.

Single Person vs. Couple: A Big Difference in ODSP Supports

Look at the support payment difference between a single person and a couple where both are not disabled.

Household Type

Total Monthly Support

Approximate Amount Per Person

Single Person

$1,408

$1,408 per person

Couple

$2,107

Approx. $1,053 per person

That is less than what a single person living alone receives. The system assumes that couples share utility expenses. Two people in one house cost less than two people in two separate houses.

ODSP for Couple: Both with Disabilities

Household Situation

Monthly Support Amount

Difference

Couple (Standard Rate)

$2,107

—

Couple (Both Adults Disabled)

$2,370

+$263 per month

Single Parent ODSP Support Payment

If you are a single parent on ODSP, your basic needs amount stays the same no matter how many children you have. It is $952 whether you have one kid or four kids. That seems strange at first, but children on ODSP receive their own basic needs amounts. Your $952 covers you as the parent. The shelter allowance is where your family size really changes the number.

A single parent with one child has a maximum shelter allowance of $941. Add a second child, and that shelter maximum goes up to $1,018. Add a third child, and it goes up again to $1,094.

So your total ODSP monthly amount by family size grows with each child, but almost all of that growth comes from the shelter side, not the basic needs side.

What About Board and Lodge Situations?

Board and lodge deserve their own mention because they throw off so many people.

If you live with your parents and they buy the groceries and cook your meals, you are not on the standard rate table. The government considers the board and lodge.

For a single person in a board and lodge, the monthly maximum is $1,038. For a couple in a board and lodge, it is $1,566.

That is much lower than the regular amounts because the system assumes your food and some utilities are already covered by the person you live with. Even if that is not really true in your case, those are the rules right now.

Remote Communities Allowance

This does not apply to most people, but it matters for those living far north. If you live north of the 50th parallel or in a community without year-round road access, you get an extra amount added to your monthly payment regardless of your family size. The Remote Communities Allowance ranges from $80 to $180 per month, depending on how isolated you are. So if you are a single person in a remote northern community, your total ODSP monthly amount by family size would be $1,408 plus the remote allowance.

The July 2026 Increase Update in ODPS Support

In July 2026, ODSP rates go up by the rate of inflation. On July 1, 2026, a 1.9% increase takes effect. Here is what the maximums will look like after that increase:

Household Type

Approximate Monthly Support (2026)

Single Person

Approx. $1,435

Couple (Not Disabled)

Approx. $2,147

Single Parent with One Child

Approx. $1,929

Couple with Two Children

Approx. $2,314

The government has now raised ODSP rates 5 times since September 2022. Total cumulative increases are over 22 percent. That does not mean the money is enough, but it does mean the amounts are slowly moving in the right direction.

What About Children on ODSP

The table above shows family amounts including children. But children themselves receive their own basic needs portion within that family’s total.

Child Category

Current Basic Needs Amount

Child Under 18

$280

Child 18 or Older Living at Home and Attending School

$351

These ODSP amounts for Children are built into the family numbers. You do not need to calculate them separately. But it helps to understand where the numbers come from.

How to Know Your Exact ODSP Monthly Amount?

The table gives you the monthly ODSP maximums. But your actual amount depends on your real shelter costs. If your rent is lower than the maximum for your family size, you get exactly what you pay, not the full max.

So a single parent with one child paying $800 in rent would receive $952 in basic needs plus $800 in shelter, for a total of $1,752. That is lower than the $1,893 maximum shown in the table.

The only way to know your exact number is to look at your actual housing costs and compare them to the shelter maximum for your family size. You can also use our ODSP Payment Calculator to know the estimated amount.

Final Words

The ODSP monthly amount by family size ranges from $1,408 for a single person up to $2,370 for a couple where both have disabilities. Adding children increases your shelter allowance but not your basic needs as a parent. The table above provides you with the 2026 maximum ODSP for every common family situation. And remember that the July increase will add roughly 1.9% to every number on this list.

If you are applying for the Ontario Disability Support Program, you have probably noticed that the payment numbers depend on who lives in your home.
