The BC Business Natural Gas Bill Calculator helps commercial, institutional, and industrial customers understand their natural gas rates and estimate monthly costs based on consumption. Business Rate Schedules at a Glance

Rate 2

For: Commercial, institutional, or small industrial operations using less than 2,000 GJ annually (restaurants, apartment buildings).

Basic charge: $1.4309/day

Delivery charge: $5.877/GJ

Storage & transport: $2.276/GJ (Mainland/Revelstoke) or $0.771/GJ (Fort Nelson)

Rate 3

For: Commercial, institutional, or small industrial operations using more than 2,000 GJ annually (schools, offices).

Basic charge: $4.3526/day

Delivery charge: $5.377/GJ

Storage & transport: $2.051/GJ (Mainland/Revelstoke) or $0.759/GJ (Fort Nelson)

Rate 4

For: Large commercial operations or institutions using natural gas only in warmer months (April 1 - November 1), such as municipal swimming pools or summer agricultural crops.

Note: Seasonal use only – winter usage incurs substantial premium. Requires written consent.

Rate 5

For: Large-volume customers using approximately 5,000 GJ or more annually. Requires written contract.

Structure: Fixed charges (basic + demand volume) plus variable charges per GJ.

Rate 6

For: Companies with natural gas vehicle fleets or those retailing natural gas to vehicle customers.

Rate 7

For: Large-volume customers who can switch to alternative energy sources. Service may be interrupted during coldest days.

Requires: Written contract with specific terms.

Specialized Business Rates

Rate 4 – Seasonal Use

For customers using natural gas only between April 1 and November 1 (municipal pools, summer agriculture). Fixed daily basic charge applies only during consumption months, plus variable charges. Requires written consent.

Rate 5 – Large Volume

For customers using approximately 5,000+ GJ annually. Includes fixed charges (daily basic + demand volume) plus variable delivery and commodity charges. Requires written contract.

Rate 6 – Natural Gas Vehicles

For fleet operators or retailers selling natural gas for vehicle use. Contact FortisBC for specific rate structures.

Rate 7 – Interruptible Service

For large-volume customers who can switch to alternative fuels. Service may be interrupted during peak demand days. Requires written contract.

How Business Natural Gas Rates Work

Basic Charge: A fixed daily fee covering customer service, billing, and meter reading – regardless of consumption.

Delivery Charge: Covers local distribution system costs including pipeline maintenance and operations.

Storage and Transport: Costs for storing natural gas and transporting through main transmission pipelines.

Cost of Gas: The actual commodity price of natural gas, reviewed quarterly by the BCUC.

Choosing the Right Rate Schedule: If your business uses less than 2,000 GJ annually, Rate 2 is appropriate. For usage above 2,000 GJ, Rate 3 provides lower per-unit charges but higher fixed costs. Large-volume customers should contact FortisBC directly to discuss Rate 5, 6, or 7 options.
