๐ How the Federal Luxury Tax Worksโผ
What is it?
The Federal Luxury Tax came into effect on September 1, 2022. It applies to the sale or import of high-value vehicles with a retail price over $100,000.
How is it calculated?
The tax is the lesser of:
- 20% of the value above $100,000, OR
- 10% of the full vehicle value
Example โ $150,000 vehicle:
- Option A: ($150,000 โ $100,000) ร 20% = $10,000
- Option B: $150,000 ร 10% = $15,000
- Luxury Tax = Lesser of A or B = $10,000
Exemptions
Certain zero-emission vehicles may be exempt from the luxury tax. Check with the CRA for current rules.
5 Frequently Asked Questions
How much tax do I pay on a car in Canada?
Tax depends on your province. GST is 5% federal. HST is 13โ15% in Ontario and Atlantic provinces. PST varies (6โ7% in BC, SK, MB, and BC has tiered rates up to 20%). Quebec has 9.975% QST. Alberta, Yukon, NWT, and Nunavut have no provincial sales tax.
Do I pay tax on a private used car sale?
Private sales do not have GST. However, most provinces charge provincial tax at registration based on the greater of the purchase price or wholesale value. Alberta, Yukon, NWT, and Nunavut charge no tax on private sales.
What is the "Alberta loophole"?
There is no loophole. Alberta has no provincial sales tax, but if you live in another province, you must pay your home province's tax when you register the vehicle. The savings are not real โ only the vehicle price itself may be lower.
How does trade-in affect tax?
At a dealership, the trade-in value is deducted from the purchase price before tax is calculated. This reduces your taxable amount. For example, a $30,000 car with a $10,000 trade-in is taxed on $20,000 only.
What is the federal luxury tax?
Vehicles over $100,000 are subject to the federal luxury tax, calculated as the lesser of 20% of the amount over $100,000 or 10% of the full vehicle value. It applies on top of all other taxes.
Which province has the lowest car tax?
Alberta, Yukon, Northwest Territories, and Nunavut have no provincial sales tax โ only 5% GST on dealer sales. Private sales in these jurisdictions have zero tax.
Do I pay tax if I buy out of province?
Yes. You pay tax based on where you live, not where you buy. The tax is paid when you register the vehicle in your home province.
