Planning your taxes in the Northwest Territories? Our comprehensive Northwest Territories Income Tax Calculator helps you estimate your 2025 and 2026 tax liability accurately. Whether you are an employee, self-employed, or have investment income, this tool provides CRA-compliant calculations based on the latest federal and Northwest Territories tax brackets. The Northwest Territories has one of the lowest territorial tax systems in Canada, with rates ranging from 5.9 percent to 14.05 percent.
Understanding your tax obligation is essential for effective financial planning. Our calculator follows the Canadian progressive marginal tax system, ensuring that each portion of your income is taxed at its appropriate rate, rather than applying a flat tax rate to your entire income. This approach aligns with the methodology used by the Canada Revenue Agency and professional tax preparation software like TurboTax.
Across Canada, and in all the provinces, a progressive income tax system is applied to calculate income tax. It means bigger portions of your income are taxed at higher rates rather than taxing your entire income at one certain rate. As a resident of the Northwest Territories, your taxable income meets both federal income tax and territorial income tax criteria
Federal income tax is applied uniformly across Canada. The government of the Northwest Territories sets its own territorial tax rates and credits. Additionally, to income tax, employers have to deduct mandatory payroll contributions, such as CPP/CPP2 and Employment Insurance (EI), from eligible earnings.
Unlike many provinces, the Northwest Territories does not impose a Provincial Sales Tax (PST) or Retail Sales Tax (RST). Residents need to pay 5% federal Goods and Services Tax, making the territory one of the few jurisdictions in Canada without an additional sales tax.
