This Income Support Calculator Alberta helps Albertian families to calculate your monthly Income Support benefits based on official rates. Follow these simple steps you can easliy calculate your estimated payment based on your unique situation.

Step 1: Household Status

Select the family type that you whom you lives with to determines your basic needs and shelter rates. Select Single if you live alone and choose Couple if you live with a spouse or common-law-partner.

Step 1.1: Children 17 or under?

Enter the No. of dependent children aged 17 or younger live in your home with you. Each child increases your basic needs benefit. The table includes rates for up to 6 children, with an additional amount for each child beyond that.

Step 1.2: No. of Dependent adults 18+?

Enter the number of adult dependents (18 or 18+) who depend on you financially. These could be adult children with disabilities or elderly parents you care.

Step 1.3: Children 18-19 attending high school?

Enter the no. of dependents aged 18 ot 19 who are actively enrolled in high school. These young adults are treated differently than younger children. They can add $238 to your core essential benefit. If a 18-19 dependent is not going to high school, not included in your benefit calculation.

Step 2: Select Employment Stream

This is one of the most important choices that determines which rate table the calculator uses.

Choose ETW (Expected to Work): If you are willing to work, are actively looking for a work, or are working but earning below the AB Income Support threshold. ETW rates are lower because you are expected to move toward employment.

Choose BFE (Barriers to Full Employment): If you have a chronic health disease, disability, or other problem that not let you work or participate in full-time employment training. BFE rates are higher to account for additional needs.

Your employment stream is confirmed by a caseworker during your Alberta Income Support application. If you're unsure which applies to you, BFE typically requires medical documentation. Alberta Income Support Payment Calculator only determines your benefits based on your entry.

Step 3: Housing Details

Housing type and Shelter costs are a major component of your monthly benefit.

Step 3.1 Choose Housing type

  • Choose "Private housing (rent/mortgage)" if you rent from a landlord, have a mortgage, or pay rent to a private owner. This gives you the highest shelter allowance.
  • Choose "Social housing" if you live in government-subsidized housing. Shelter rates are set at a fixed amount.
  • Select "Living with relatives" if you live with parents, grandparents, or adult children without paying market rent. You receive a flat shelter rate.
  • Select "Food Only No Shelter Cost" if you live in a condition where you pay only for the food without rent.

Step 3.2: Monthly shelter cost Details

Enter your actual monthly rent or mortgage payment. This Alberta income support calculator will compare your entered amount against the maximum shelter rate for your household type and employment stream.

You will receive the lower of your actual shelter cost or the maximum shelter allowance for your situation. If the maximum private housing shelter for a single ETW adult is $381, but your rent is $500, you receive $381. If your rent is only $300, you receive $300.

Step 4: Supplements You Qualify For

Supplements can increase your monthly payment. Only select those that apply to you.

Step 4.1 Earnings Replacement Benefit:

Select "Yes" if you are in an ETW household where all adults are temporarily unable to work or attend training due to illness, injury, or other approved reason. Adds $102 per household.

Step 4.5 Isolated community:

Choose "Yes" if you live in a community without year-round road access (e.g., many northern Alberta communities). This may affect your benefit calculation.

Step 5 Special diets:

Check all boxes that apply to you or any household member with a medically prescribed diet. You can combine multiple diets (except where noted, such as not taking both Low Cholesterol and Low Fat). Each diet adds its monthly amount to your benefit.

  • Diabetic + High Fibre: $48 + $26 = $74
  • Celiac + Low Sodium: $95 + $26 = $121
  • Renal Failure + High Calcium: $132 + $26 = $158

Special diet allowances require a medical prescription document from a doctor, nurse practitioner, or dietitian.

Select "None" if you have no school-aged children. The Alberta Income Support Payment calculator automatically adds the appropriate amount based on the child's age. Choose Age 4 - 5 or kindergarten, Age 6 - 11 or grades 1- 6, or Age 12+ or grades 7 - 12.
