FAQ
How is my CDCP co-payment calculated?
Your co-payment is a percentage of the CDCP established fee, based on your adjusted family net income. Under $70,000: 0% co-pay. $70,000-$79,999: 40% co-pay. $80,000-$89,999: 60% co-pay.
What is balance billing?
Balance billing is the difference between what your dental provider charges and what the CDCP reimburses. Even with 100% coverage, you may owe this difference if your provider charges above the CDCP fee.
Does 100% coverage mean my dental care is free?
No. 100% coverage means the CDCP pays 100% of its established fees. If your dentist charges more than the CDCP fee, you pay the difference (balance billing).
What is the CDCP established fee?
The CDCP has its own fee grid that varies by province. These fees may be lower than your dentist's actual charges. The CDCP publishes Dental Benefit Grids for each province.
How do I find my adjusted family net income?
Use Line 23600 from your tax return plus Line 23600 from your spouse's return (if applicable), minus UCCB/RDSP income received, plus UCCB/RDSP amounts repaid.
What procedures are covered by the CDCP?
The CDCP covers diagnostic and preventive services (exams, x-rays, cleanings), basic services (fillings, root canals, extractions), major services (crowns, dentures), and oral surgery. Orthodontic services are not currently covered.
What procedures are NOT covered?
Dental implants are not covered at any income level. Cosmetic treatments like teeth whitening and veneers are also excluded.
Do I need pre-authorization for some procedures?
Yes. Crowns, partial dentures, and certain other services require pre-authorization before treatment. Your provider submits a request and the CDCP confirms coverage before you receive the service.
How often can I get covered services?
The CDCP has frequency limits for certain services. For example, complete dentures are covered once per arch per 96 months. Frequency limits are not cumulative with provincial programs.
How do I apply for the CDCP?
Apply online at Canada.ca/dental, through your My Service Canada Account, or by calling 1-833-537-4342.
