โ“ FAQ
How is the CDB calculated for couples? โ–ผ
The CDB for couples is based on your combined adjusted family net income. A working income exemption of up to $14,000 is applied to combined working income. If income after exemption is below $32,500, you get the maximum benefit.
What if only one partner is eligible for CDB? โ–ผ
If only one partner is eligible, the couple threshold ($32,500) and couple exemption ($14,000) still apply to your combined income. The eligible partner receives the benefit.
What if both partners are eligible for CDB? โ–ผ
If both partners are eligible, each receives their own benefit. The reduction is split โ€” each partner's benefit is reduced by 10 cents per dollar over the threshold, rather than 20 cents.
How is combined working income calculated? โ–ผ
Combined working income is the sum of both partners' employment, self-employment, and taxable scholarship income. Up to $14,000 of this combined amount is exempt.
What is the maximum benefit for couples? โ–ผ
The maximum benefit is $2,400 per year ($200 per month) per eligible person. For a couple where both are eligible, the household maximum is $4,800 per year ($400 per month).
Do both partners need to file taxes? โ–ผ
Yes, both you and your spouse or common-law partner must have filed your federal income tax return for the relevant year.
