FAQ
What is shared custody for the CCB?
Shared custody means a child lives with each parent at least 40% of the time (roughly 3 days per week). If you meet this, each parent receives 50% of the CCB amount they'd get with full custody.
How is the shared custody CCB calculated?
Each parent receives 50% of what they would have received with full custody. The amount is calculated based on each parent's own adjusted family net income (AFNI).
Can I get a different split (e.g., 60/40)?
No. The CRA will only split the CCB 50/50 for shared custody. Custom percentages are not allowed.
Do both parents need to apply for the CCB?
Yes. Each parent should apply for the CCB individually. The CRA will determine shared custody status based on the information provided.
Will the combined payments exceed the full custody amount?
No. The combined amount paid to both parents cannot exceed what one parent would receive with full custody.
How is my AFNI calculated?
Your AFNI is your family net income (line 23600) minus UCCB/RDSP income received, plus UCCB/RDSP amounts repaid.
How much is the maximum CCB in 2026?
For July 2026 to June 2027: $8,157/year ($679.75/month) per child under 6, and $6,883/year ($573.58/month) per child aged 6 to 17.
What if my income changes?
CCB payments are recalculated every July based on your previous year's AFNI. A change in income in 2025 will affect payments starting in July 2026.
Are provincial benefits also split?
Yes. Many provincial/territorial child benefits (like Ontario Child Benefit or BC Family Benefit) are also split 50/50 for shared custody.
How do I apply for the CCB?
Apply through the CRA's My Account, by mail using Form RC66, or by calling 1-800-387-1193. Both parents should apply if they have shared custody.
