❓ FAQ
What is the Northern Ontario Energy Credit (NOEC)? β–Ό
The NOEC is a tax-free payment to help Northern Ontarians with the higher home energy costs they face. It is part of the Ontario Trillium Benefit (OTB).
Who is eligible for the NOEC? β–Ό
You must be a resident of one of the 10 eligible Northern Ontario districts on December 31, 2025, meet specific age/parental requirements, and have rented, paid property tax, lived on a reserve and paid energy costs, or lived in a public long-term care home in 2025.
How much can I receive from the NOEC? β–Ό
For 2026, single individuals with no children can receive up to $189. Families (couples or single parents) can receive up to $290.
How is the NOEC calculated? β–Ό
For singles with no children: income up to $50,833 gets the full $189. Above that, the credit reduces by 1% of income over the threshold. No payment if income is $69,733 or more. For families: income up to $65,356 gets the full $290. Above that, the credit reduces by 1% of income over the threshold. No payment if income is $94,356 or more.
When are NOEC payments made? β–Ό
The NOEC is combined with other OTB credits. If your annual OTB entitlement is more than $500, you receive monthly payments starting July 10, 2026. If $500 or less, you receive a single lump-sum payment.
Do I need to apply for the NOEC? β–Ό
You apply by filing your personal Income Tax and Benefit Return and completing the ON-BEN Application Form. You must file even if you have no income to report.
What if my income is very close to the cut-off? β–Ό
If your annual NOEC is $2.00 or less, no payment is issued. If it is between $2.01 and $10.00, you receive one payment of $10.00.
Can I get the NOEC if I moved during the year? β–Ό
Eligibility is determined based on where you live on the 1st of each month. If you move out of Northern Ontario, you would be eligible for the month you moved but not for subsequent months.
Who applies for the NOEC if I am married? β–Ό
If you were married or common-law on December 31, 2025, either spouse can apply for the NOEC for both of you. If only one spouse is 64 or older, that spouse must apply.
