❓ FAQ
What is the OEPTC? β–Ό
The Ontario Energy and Property Tax Credit is a refundable tax credit that helps low- to moderate-income Ontario residents with property taxes and sales tax on energy costs. It is part of the Ontario Trillium Benefit (OTB).
Who is eligible for the OEPTC? β–Ό
You must be an Ontario resident on December 31, 2025, meet age/parental requirements (18+, or have a spouse, or be a parent), and have rented, paid property tax, lived on a reserve, or lived in a public long-term care home in 2025.
How much can I receive? β–Ό
For 2026: Up to $1,307 (ages 18-64), $1,488 (65+), $290 (reserve or public LTC), or $25 (student residence).
How is the OEPTC calculated? β–Ό
The credit has two components β€” an energy component (up to $290) and a property tax component (based on rent/property tax paid). These are summed, then reduced by 2% of income over the applicable threshold.
What is the income threshold? β–Ό
Single: $29,047. Married/common-law under 65: $36,309. Married/common-law seniors (65+): $43,571.
When are OEPTC payments made? β–Ό
The OEPTC is combined with other OTB credits. If your annual OTB entitlement is over $500, you receive monthly payments starting July 10, 2026. If $500 or less, you receive a single lump-sum payment.
Do I need to apply? β–Ό
Yes. You must file your tax return and complete Form ON-BEN, Application for the 2026 Ontario Trillium Benefit. File even if you have no income.
Can students claim OEPTC? β–Ό
Yes. Students living in a designated college, university, or private school residence can claim the OEPTC, with $25 added to the occupancy cost calculation.
What if my spouse and I are both 65+? β–Ό
If you were married or common-law and either spouse is 64 or older on December 31, 2025, that spouse must apply for the credit for both of you.
How do I contact the CRA? β–Ό
